Kulon is a small but well-regarded restaurant that has been bringing authentic Javanese bakmi to Singapore since 2020. Started by a mother-and-son duo with roots in Central Java, it grew from a humble school canteen project into one of the more distinctive Indonesian dining spots in the city, earning Time Out Singapore recommendations in 2020, 2022, and 2023.
The menu is built around bakmi — thick yellow wheat noodles tossed in a sweet soy sauce and served with toppings like minced chicken, bakso beef balls, and crispy fried wonton skin. Several recipes trace back to family tradition, including a char siu preparation passed down from the founder's late grandmother. For something heartier, the Nasi Ayam Geprek Ijo is a standout: boneless smashed fried chicken blanketed in a fragrant green chilli sambal, served with rice and shrimp crackers. Free-flow soup comes with every meal — a simple touch that adds real warmth to the experience.
The space is compact and cosy, with a relaxed walk-in vibe perfect for an unhurried lunch or dinner.
